Earlier this week, St. Louis Rams running back Daryl Richardson caused a stir after tweeting that he was not starting at running back this week. Afterwards on Wednesday, Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said that the starting tailback has not been decided for Week 5.
The Rams should certainly look at changing something in the backfield as the team managed to gain just 18 yards in 19 attempts against a short-handed San Francisco 49ers defense in Week 4.
That is not good enough. A change at running back is definitely necessary.
But is that the only change the Rams should make? Should there be changes made to the interior offensive line too?
Going back to the preseason, the interior of the Rams offensive line failed to get great push and the running game suffered then and the problems are being compounded now in the regular season as the Rams have failed over and over again to get anything established via the run.
Center Scott Wells and guards Harvey Dahl and Chris Williams have had a bulk of the playing time and the holes have just not been there.
Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has rightfully taken heat for his unimaginative play-calling and asking his running backs to plow through the middle of brick wall has not helped matters.
But the Rams interior line has not done the job. Plain and simple. They are getting beat off the ball, they are not getting a push and are not making life any easier for the running attack or quarterback Sam Bradford.
Switching the running back should make a difference, but making a change upfront may shake things up even further. Fisher and the Rams must be willing to try anything at this point to open up holes for the running game, collect first downs and most importantly, find a way to win a football game.
