When the St. Louis Cardinals finally decided to promote second base prospect Kolten Wong, fans in the St. Louis area wondered how manager Mike Matheny would deploy his new toy and from the outset, it looks like Matheny plans to play Wong often.
The 22-year old has now started four out of five games since his promotion and is already making a huge difference with legs.
On Monday night, Wong picked up his first and second infield hits, both of the infield variety, sprinting down the first base path and beating out throws by Milwaukee Brewers fielders. Wong picked up another infield hit in Tuesday night’s game before collecting his first traditional hit, a single to right field, and a double down the left field line.
Wong was brought to St. Louis to stir things up as the offense had gone stale. Wong’s legs have played a big part already. After a pair of steals on Monday night, Wong swiped a third bag on Tuesday and he is already making a difference in a way that the Cardinals never have had this season.
Matt Holliday leads the team with six steals on the season, but Wong will certainly bypass the slugger soon in the stolen base department.
Wong was also brought up to provide a spark and provide third baseman David Freese with some competition for playing time. Freese, who has just six home runs on the season, has not produced the way the Cardinals need him to in the power department and has not drove in enough runs either and if Freese is not going knock runs in, then Wong needs to be creating runs with his legs.
So far, so good for Wong and the Cardinals. The youngster will likely get the day off on Wednesday with a lefty on the hill for the Brewers, but the kid is doing exactly what general manager John Mozeliak hoped he would when the decision was finally made to bring him up.
Wong is taking good at bats, wrecking havoc with his legs and giving the Cardinals an offensive element they have been looking for.
